[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jeong] A chain collision involving dozens of vehicles occurred on a highway in Changsha, Hunan Province, China, resulting in 16 deaths and 66 injuries.
According to the Hunan Provincial Highway Traffic Police Bureau on the 5th, around 5 p.m. the previous day, seven vehicles collided in a chain collision on the Xi Guang Expressway in Changsha City. Subsequently, vehicles following behind failed to avoid the stopped cars and caused four more chain collisions involving 9 to 12 vehicles each time.
The number of vehicles involved in the accident reached 49 confirmed cases. The accident resulted in 16 fatalities, and 66 people were injured, among whom 8 were reported to be in serious condition.
Videos posted on social media platform Weibo showed dozens of passenger cars and trucks tangled together, with some vehicles overturned and resting on the roofs of other cars.
After the accident, local fire departments dispatched 182 rescue personnel and 30 vehicles to the scene to carry out rescue operations.
Authorities stated that as of 5 p.m. on the 5th, traffic had resumed in the accident area, and an investigation into the exact cause of the accident is underway.
