Lee began his journalism career in 1990 at Seoul Shinmun, serving as Washington correspondent, political chief, and deputy editor. In early 2017, when former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was considering running for president, Lee left Seoul Shinmun to serve as his spokesperson. After Ban announced he would not run for president shortly thereafter, Lee moved to Munhwa Ilbo.

Chief Kim said, "He has provided in-depth analysis and balanced perspectives on domestic and international political, diplomatic, and social issues," adding, "We expect him to excellently fulfill the role of accurately conveying President Yoon Seok-yeol’s intentions and serving as a bridge for communication with the public."

Meeting with reporters that day, Lee said, "There are many issues related to communication since moving to Yongsan, and problems that need to be resolved," adding, "I believe these can be addressed through communication with the media." He also introduced that he has a middle school daughter, saying, "If I speak to her ten times, she reluctantly responds once. Still, I keep trying to communicate." He added, "I will devote ten times the effort I put into communicating with my daughter to communicating with the press corps." Furthermore, he said, "As spokesperson, I will represent the intentions of the president and the Presidential Office well to you, listen carefully to the thoughts of the media and the public, and convey them to the Presidential Office," and "If the media and the Presidential Office communicate well, I believe it can contribute somewhat to resolving conflicts related to region, ideology, generation, and gender."
