The public hearing was an administrative procedure for the full-scale designation of the Small Giant Research and Development Special Zone following the lifting of the development restriction zone in December 2022. The Small Giant Research and Development Special Zone Electric and Mechanical Convergence Research Complex, to be established in an area of approximately 173,000㎡ in Bulmosan-dong, Seongsan-gu, will be arranged with an education and research commercialization facility zone where the core technology institution, Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, will be located; an industrial promotion zone where technology development and transfer companies and research institutes will be housed; and an industrial support zone including dormitories and neighborhood living facilities, thereby fulfilling the functions of the research complex.
The city, together with Gyeongsangnam-do Province, plans to collect expert and resident opinions from this public hearing, then consult with related agencies (departments), and apply to the Ministry of Science and ICT for additional designation of the Small Giant Research and Development Special Zone. Administrative efforts will be concentrated to enable designation in the second half of 2023.
Mayor Hong Nam-pyo said, “We will make every effort to ensure the additional designation of the Bulmosan District Small Giant Special Zone and the full-scale promotion of future projects,” adding, “We expect the formation of an intelligent electric-based R&D cluster centered on the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute to revitalize Changwon’s slowed main industries and manufacturing, and transform it into an advanced industrial city leading the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
