Gwangju City and Ministry of National Defense Hold 'Military Airport Relocation Briefing' for Yeonggwang and Hampyeong Counties

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kang Ki-jung) announced on the 3rd that it will hold the ‘Gwangju Military Airport Relocation Briefing Session’ in Yeonggwang County and Hampyeong County on the 7th and 8th, respectively.

The event was promoted after Yeonggwang County and Hampyeong County officially requested the military airport relocation briefing session.

Gwangju City and Ministry of National Defense Hold 'Military Airport Relocation Briefing' for Yeonggwang and Hampyeong Counties

On the day, Yeonggwang County requested a military airport relocation briefing session from Gwangju City and the Ministry of National Defense following the demand of the Yeonggwang County Federation of Youth Associations, and it was decided to hold the briefing session for about 400 people at the Yeonggwang Arts Center on the 7th.

Hampyeong County requested the briefing session the day before through the Gwangju Military Airport Hampyeong County Attraction Committee, and it was decided to hold it at the Daedong Township Office in Hampyeong on the 8th.

The Ministry of National Defense will explain the necessity, procedures, and standards of the military airport relocation project. Gwangju City will explain the support contents related to the relocation and the compensation procedures. Afterwards, there will be a Q&A session with the attending residents.

Jung Jeon-guk, Director of the Military Airport Relocation Division of the city, said, “Following Hampyeong County in November last year, we are holding briefing sessions this year at the request of Yeonggwang County and Hampyeong County. This briefing session is not a place to discuss official positions or pros and cons of Yeonggwang and Hampyeong counties, but a public hearing-type event to explain the relocation procedures and standards, share support contents and effects for the relocation areas.”

He added, “We also plan to provide time to answer various questions to resolve residents’ concerns about the military airport relocation project. We hope that this briefing session will mark a significant step forward for the Gwangju military airport relocation project.”

Meanwhile, Gwangju City expects the Gwangju military airport relocation project to proceed at a rapid pace, as at the ‘Gwangju Military Airport Relocation Special Act Current Issues Meeting’ held at the National Assembly on the 27th of last month, the National Assembly, government, and local governments agreed to cooperate on national financial support for the shortfall between donations and grants related to the military airport relocation project, exemption from preliminary feasibility studies, and the prompt passage of the special law.
