'119 Calls' Averaging 1,005 Daily in Daejeon... "Non-Emergency Reports Dramatically Decrease"

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Last year, an average of 1,005 119 emergency calls were received daily in Daejeon.

According to Daejeon Fire Department on the 3rd, a total of 366,922 119 emergency calls were received and processed last year, showing a slight increase compared to the previous year (367,739 calls in 2021).

Among these, the number of emergency dispatches related to safety, such as fire, rescue, and emergency medical services, reached 164,270. This is about a 14% increase from 144,027 cases in 2021.

On the other hand, non-emergency dispatches such as preventive patrols and public assistance totaled 6,341, a sharp decrease of 26,860 cases compared to 33,201 in 2021.

Daejeon Fire Department analyzes that the number of non-emergency (prank, false, simple inquiry) calls has significantly decreased as citizens' awareness of reporting has improved.

Earlier, Daejeon Fire Department introduced and began operating an AI-based 119 call reception system last year. This system assists in receiving emergency calls when communication with the caller is difficult due to pronunciation issues or other reasons by using artificial intelligence.

Yoo Soo-yeol, head of the 119 Comprehensive Situation Room at Daejeon Fire Headquarters, said, “We will do our best to strengthen the social safety net through the AI-based 119 call reception system so that Daejeon can become a safer city in urgent situations such as fire, rescue, and emergency medical services.”
