Launching a New School Model... Gyeongbuk Province Promotes 'School Complex Facilities'

Collaboration Among Ministry of Education, Education Offices, and Pohang City

Creating Living SOC Spaces in Idle Areas

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] Gyeongbuk Province is promoting a new school model called the so-called school complex facility in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Pohang City, and other related organizations.

On the 3rd, Gyeongbuk Province announced that it signed a business agreement at Pohang High School for the smooth promotion and revitalization of the school facility complex project, attended by Lee Ju-ho, Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Education, National Assembly member Kim Byung-wook, Gyeongsangbuk-do Superintendent of Education Lim Jong-sik, Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok, and Nam Han-kwon, Ulleung County Governor.

The school complex facility is a new school facility model that installs and operates public facilities such as education, culture, welfare, and sports necessary for student education and local residents' lives in a complex manner within the school site.

This agreement is being promoted as a way to resolve the problem of local extinction caused by school consolidation and closure due to the decrease in the school-age population and to achieve mutual growth with the local community.

The contents of the agreement include creating internal and external conditions for the smooth promotion of the Gyeongsangbuk-do school complex facility project, mutual sharing of project-related data and information, securing various investment resources, and other cooperation matters agreed upon by participating organizations.

In this regard, the Ministry of Education's plan to revitalize the school facility complex project, promoted as a region-customized core policy among the four major education reforms announced on the 5th, is expected to be announced in February.

Gyeongbuk Province proactively responded by signing a business agreement with Yeongyang County on the 13th for the school complex facility project (creation of a public parking lot) at Yeongyang Elementary School and is promoting a project to install a swimming pool at Mungyeong Middle School in Mungyeong City.

In addition, it is promoting an education free zone that enables region-customized education through educational innovation driven by regulatory reform by the Ministry of Education.

Gyeongbuk Province also plans to proactively respond to the Regional Innovation-centered University Support System (RISE) pilot project, which promotes deregulation of universities and the transfer of administrative and financial authority over universities to local governments, enabling regional governments and universities to grow together.

Kim Hak-hong, Deputy Governor, said, “We plan to improve local living conditions by further expanding libraries, parking lots, and complex sports facilities utilizing idle school facilities that are increasing due to the decrease in the school-age population.”
