"Writing Malware with ChatGPT"... Increasing Cases of Hackers Exploiting It

Crime Methods Spreading Through Dark Web Sites
Concerns as Even Beginners Can Easily Create Them

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] It has been reported that cases of cybercrime using the globally popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot 'ChatGPT' to create malware or phishing emails are increasing. Amid concerns that this could lead to a rapid rise in cybercrime and hackers, there is a growing call for alternatives to address vulnerable security issues.

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) on the 2nd, Israeli security company Check Point announced on the 19th of last month that cases of cybercrime abusing ChatGPT to create malware or phishing emails have been discovered. It is known that methods of cybercrime using ChatGPT are already widely posted on Dark Web sites where hackers share various techniques.

Check Point revealed that one hacker they identified planned various types of cybercrime using ChatGPT, such as writing Android malware, installing backdoors on computers, or uploading hacking programs called malware to compromised computers. Another hacker shared Python code capable of encrypting files and said that ChatGPT helped in creating the files, according to Check Point.

It is also known that chatbots and sites capable of sending scam and phishing emails using ChatGPT can be built. In particular, even people without special knowledge of coding or hacking can easily create malware or phishing email programs, lowering the barrier for beginners to enter cybercrime, experts point out.

Sergey Shchekevich, a researcher at Check Point, stated, "ChatGPT can be an excellent tool for Russian hackers who are not proficient in English to create phishing emails," and emphasized, "Ultimately, protection against the criminal use of ChatGPT should be enforced through regulation."
