Wonjae Lee, Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Supports Team Korea's Contract Acquisition in Peru

Meeting with Minister of Transportation and Communications and Director of Urban Transportation Agency
Discussing Participation Plans for Amazon PMO and ODM Projects

[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Wanyong] Lee Won-jae, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, who visited Peru to support the expansion of overseas construction project orders, held meetings with key government officials to discuss ways to participate in infrastructure projects.


According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 2nd, Vice Minister Lee met with Paola Lazarte, Minister of Transport and Communications of Peru, and Alexei Oblitas, Director of the National Highway Authority, to discuss ways to participate in major infrastructure projects.

At the meeting, Vice Minister Lee said, "If Team Korea (Korean companies) participates in the Amazon Road Maintenance Project Management Office (PMO), it will become a model case of intergovernmental cooperation," and actively supported the order acquisition.


The Amazon PMO project is a project for three sections totaling 214 km ordered by the National Highway Authority under the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Peru. The total construction cost is about 300 million USD (370 billion KRW). Among them, the PMO project cost is expected to be about 20 billion KRW, and the submission deadline for technical and price proposals is scheduled for the 15th.


Vice Minister Lee also proposed cooperation projects such as providing transportation sector education programs through Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects and conducting feasibility studies for airport railroads.


In response, Minister Lazarte of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Peru said, "Korea is the best cooperation partner to develop Peru's transportation infrastructure," and added, "We look forward to receiving Korea's experience and technology through expanded cooperation in infrastructure such as roads and railways."


Additionally, Vice Minister Lee visited the Peru Urban Transportation Authority to discuss ways to promote the construction project of Lima Metro Line 3, in which Korean companies have strong interest in participation.


Vice Minister Lee said, "We will support Team Korea and policy financial institutions to collaborate so that the Lima Metro Line 3 construction project can proceed swiftly, reviewing ways to implement the project linked with financial support."


Hara, Director of the Lima Callao Urban Transportation Authority of Peru, responded, "We trust Korea's technology in the railway sector, and once the review of the priority sections is completed, we will closely cooperate with the Korean government in the project implementation process."


Vice Minister Lee also held meetings with Wernel Salcedo, Governor of Cusco, and the Mayor of Chinchero. At the meeting, he conveyed, "The Korean government plans to make the Chinchero New Airport a gateway airport to Machu Picchu, a world-renowned tourist destination, and a driving force for regional economic growth through its best efforts."


Governor Salcedo actively requested Korea's excellent technology transfer and promised to create a safe and friendly business environment so that Korean companies in various fields such as smart cities, tourism, and culture can enter the local market.


Vice Minister Lee also visited the Chinchero New Airport PMO project team and the Lima Metro Line 2 construction site to check the project status and encourage company officials.


Vice Minister Lee evaluated, "Peru is a Latin American market with high potential to diversify the countries and sectors for our companies' overseas construction expansion," and said, "This year, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, will be recognized as a new opportunity for Korea-Peru infrastructure cooperation, and we plan to actively discover and support promising cooperation projects."
