Yangsan Environmental Federation Urges Modernization of NC Yangsan Waste Facility

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] The Yangsan Environmental Federation urged the waste disposal company NC Yangsan, located in Sanmak Industrial Complex, Yangsan, Gyeongnam, to modernize its facilities.

On the 1st, members including Lee Bok-sik, the representative of the Yangsan Environmental Federation, held a press conference at the briefing room of Yangsan City Hall, urging the implementation of NC Yangsan's modernization project.

They criticized the company, saying, "Residents are suffering from foul odors and dust, but the company has been ignoring this and postponing the promised improvement projects for years with various excuses."

They added, "This company, known to process 60 tons per day, has been promising to replace its facilities with state-of-the-art equipment for several years, announcing plans to invest 40 billion won in facility improvements, but has continuously failed to execute them."

Representative Lee Bok-sik expressed anger, saying, "I heard that some conflicts with residents arose due to the increased capacity of the new facilities, making it difficult to proceed with the project. It is incomprehensible to delay the promised facility improvements with such absurd excuses."

Yangsan Environmental Federation Urges Modernization of NC Yangsan Waste Facility Yangsan Environmental Federation is holding a press conference in the briefing room of Yangsan City Hall.

NC Yangsan attempted to promote a modernization project for its waste incineration plant in October last year, but it was canceled due to opposition from the Citizens' Countermeasure Committee against expansion.

Lee said, "If it is a state-of-the-art facility that claims no pollution damage from odors, dust, dioxins, etc., then what problem is there with processing capacity? That is the business capability of the disposal company, and delaying advanced facilities under the pretext of opposition is mocking the citizens of Yangsan."

Following this, the Yangsan Environmental Federation urged, "NC Yangsan should take a model stance and swift action to invest the money earned in the region back into facility improvements to eliminate residents' suffering even for a day."

In October last year, NC Yangsan, based on an agreement with nearby residents, promoted a modernization project to demolish all incineration facilities with a daily processing capacity of 60 tons and build a new state-of-the-art incineration plant with a capacity of 200 tons.

However, the Odor and Dust Countermeasure Committee composed of nearby residents opposed this, causing the project to be halted. The situation became more complicated when it was revealed that a person who led the residents' opposition in 2019 had secretly contracted with the company.

Regarding this, the Citizens' Countermeasure Committee Against NC Incinerator Expansion held a press conference on November 17 last year, stating, "NC Yangsan should modernize only the existing 60-ton incinerator to minimize resident damage," and expressed absolute opposition to expansion.
