Korea Island Promotion Agency Selects Geoje Isudo as 'Island of the Month' for February

This is the second "Island of the Month" selection this year, following Shinan Gageodo Island, which was chosen as the "Island of the Year" and "Island of January."

The Korea Island Promotion Agency announced on the 1st that Isudo, a representative cod fishing village located at the entrance of Jinhae Bay in Geoje, Gyeongnam, has been selected as the island of the month for February this year.

Isudo is called "Bird Island" or "Crane Island" because the shape of the island viewed from the sky resembles a bird (such as a crane or duck) in flight. It was also called "Imulseom," meaning "island of beneficial water."

The waters around Isudo are pristine and form a rich fish species group. Anchovies, hairtail, mackerel, sea bream, and cod are abundantly caught, and aquaculture of seaweed, sea mustard, and oysters is also carried out.

It is especially a spawning ground for cod. Cod spawn along the southern coast in winter, and the main spawning area is Jinhae Bay.

At Isudo, visitors can enjoy cod in season (from December to March) with a 1-night, 3-meal package. This differentiated tourism accommodation service on Isudo provides 1 night and 3 meals when only the lodging facility is reserved.

Isudo is also well known as "Deer Island." Deer are freely grazed in the grassland at the top of the island, offering visitors a small delight during the trail exploration around the island.

Oh Dongho, President of the Korea Island Promotion Agency, said, "Geoje Isudo on the southern coast is a place where spring arrives early, and it was selected as the 'Island of the Month for February' for its food and historical significance," adding, "This year as well, the Korea Island Promotion Agency will do its best to widely promote and publicize 'our islands' by linking the Island of the Month with various projects."

Meanwhile, Isudo was selected as the "Island You Want to Visit in 2022" (Spring Island). The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korea Island Promotion Agency select islands to visit every year to revitalize tourism and the local economy in island regions. Isudo (Deer Island) was selected as an "Animal Island" considering the needs of island tourists, such as cute animals.
