Daejeon City "Launches Large Taxi Service... Market Diversification"

Daejeon City "Launches Large Taxi Service... Market Diversification" Provided by Daejeon City

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Large taxi services are set to begin in Daejeon. This is expected to be a differentiated service that diversifies the taxi industry, which has been centered on passenger cars (mid-sized), and expands the range of choices for taxi users.

The Daejeon city government announced on the 1st that it has established revised operational guidelines for the large taxi business plan, which will be implemented starting this month.

The revised guidelines serve to lower the entry barriers for large taxis in the existing taxi industry. If certain requirements such as vehicle standards and equipment are met, it will be easier to change the business plan from a mid-sized license to a large vehicle license.

Through this, one large passenger taxi is expected to operate in Daejeon from early this month.

Large taxis will be introduced and operated by distinguishing between large passenger cars carrying 6 to 10 people and large vans carrying 11 to 13 people.

The fare for large passenger taxis is set at a base fare of 5,000 KRW for the first 3 km, with a distance fare of 200 KRW per 111 meters. For large vans, the fare is determined autonomously by the operator and reported to the city.

The city expects that although the large taxi fares are higher than those of mid-sized taxis (base fare of 3,300 KRW for the first 2 km, distance fare of 100 KRW per 133 meters), large taxis will establish themselves in the market as a premium transportation option that can be chosen depending on the purpose of use, such as group reservations.

Ko Hyun-deok, Director of the Transportation and Construction Bureau of the city, said, “We will strive to discover differentiated taxi services that meet the expectations of taxi users to increase citizen satisfaction and help the local taxi industry enhance its business competitiveness.”
