[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwanju] A Korean medical researcher has been recognized as the most prolific author and most cited researcher in the field of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) research worldwide over the past 20 years. The protagonist is Professor Jisoo Kim of the Department of Neurology at Bundang Seoul National University Hospital.
According to the paper titled "Global Trends in BPPV Research," published on the 1st in the specialized clinical neurology journal Frontiers in Neurology, an analysis of 1,419 BPPV research papers published from 2002 to 2021 showed that Professor Kim published the most BPPV-related papers worldwide. In particular, a total of 35 papers were cited more than 1,200 times, establishing her as the most influential researcher in BPPV studies.
BPPV is the most common cause of severe dizziness, characterized by paroxysmal vertigo occurring whenever the posture changes, and it is known to recur in half of the patients who have experienced it. In South Korea, the prevalence has surged to the extent that over 450,000 patients visited hospitals for BPPV as of 2021.
Along with this, Seoul National University ranked first as the most active institution in BPPV-related research. This objectively proves that Seoul National University and Professor Kim have made unparalleled contributions to global BPPV treatment research. Among the top 10 most cited papers worldwide over the past 20 years is a 2014 review article on BPPV authored by Professor Kim, the first Korean to publish as a review author in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).
Professor Kim stated, "I will continue to devote myself to research not only on BPPV but also on dizziness and eye movement disorders," adding, "I will keep researching ways to enable patients to easily receive diagnosis and treatment for BPPV."
