Goyang City Public Institution Union Solidarity Joins City Council Condemnation, Urging 'Normalization of Municipal Budget'

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The Goyang City Public Officials Union (hereinafter Gopongno) demanding the 'prompt normalization of the budget and approval of the organizational restructuring plan by the Goyang City Council' has been joined by the Goyang City Public Institution Labor Union Solidarity (hereinafter Gopongyeondae).

Earlier, Gopongno declared through a statement condemning the City Council, "If the budget for public welfare and business promotion expenses is not normalized and the organizational restructuring plan is not immediately approved, we will launch a large-scale protest rally through the Goyang City Public Institution Labor Union Solidarity."

Gopongno pointed out, "The City Council, which was elected to work for the citizens, is only busy securing their own interests while neglecting public welfare, planning overseas trips, which is a transfer of pain to the citizens and an act lacking dignity and conscience."

On the 30th, seven organizations including Gopongno and Gopongyeondae held a protest rally at the Goyang City Council, repeatedly urging, "The Goyang City Council must promptly approve the '2023 city administration budget normalization and organizational restructuring plan.'"

Gopongyeondae opposed, saying, "The operating expenses and business promotion expenses of all administrative departments in Goyang City have been cut by 90%, does this mean that all administrative departments in Goyang City should not carry out projects for public welfare?"

They continued, "Meanwhile, city council members have fully approved their own business promotion expenses and overseas training travel expenses, and next week they plan a training session for the chairpersons in Sokcho, in April an overseas training for the chairpersons' council, and overseas training plans for standing committees in the first half of the year," criticizing, "It is truly astonishing and the height of shamelessness to think only about eating and traveling with taxpayers' money."

Gopongyeondae also pointed out to Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang City, "Mayor Lee cannot be exempt from responsibility in the arduous process of budget formulation and review," and urged, "As a special mayor, he should practice responsible politics through grand cooperative governance."

Baek Young-beom, chairman of the Ilsan Hospital union, warned, "The City Council should promptly convene a temporary session to take measures to prevent harm to citizens," and added, "We will continue to unite and protest until the Goyang city administration is normalized."

The protest rally on this day included participation from the Goyang City public officials union, Ilsan Hospital union, EBS union, Goyang Urban Management Corporation union, Construction Technology Survey Institute union, Water Resources Survey Institute union, and Cultural Foundation union.
