Joo Kyu-il, Mayor of Jinju, Receives Cultural Award for Local Government Leaders

"I will strive to improve the Korean language skills of public officials"

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Jo Gyu-il, mayor of Jinju City, Gyeongnam, announced on the 1st that he received the Grand Prize in the cultural category for local government heads in the ‘2022 Public Sentence Writing Correctly’ contest hosted by the Woori Language Promotion Institute.


The award ceremony was held on the 31st of last month at the City Hall Entrepreneurs’ Room, attended by three officials including Kim Kwang-si, chairman of the Woori Language Promotion Institute.


The Public Sentence Writing Correctly Award from the Woori Language Promotion Institute is given to local governments that set an example by implementing correct and easy public sentences in frontline administration.

Jinju City was recognized for presenting various notices and other documents in easy-to-understand and accurate language, striving to improve public officials’ Korean language skills, and raising awareness of the importance of writing public sentences correctly.


Additionally, it was selected as the award recipient this time for its achievements in promoting city administration consistent with the value of a cultural city.


Mayor Jo said, “It is most important for public institutions to set an example for citizens by using correct and easy Korean,” and added, “We will continue to pay special attention and effort to improving the Korean language skills of public officials.”


The Woori Language Promotion Institute is a non-profit corporation established in 2011 by current and former journalists, administrators, writers, and teachers to promote communication in our society through easy and correct language, and it conducts various projects for proper Korean language use.
