'Crime City 2' Surpasses with Over 13.16 Billion KRW
The movie 'Avatar: The Way of Water' has surpassed 'Crime City 2' to rank third in domestic box office revenue for released films.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales system, 'Avatar: The Way of Water' (director James Cameron), which was released on the 14th of last month, attracted a cumulative audience of 10,358,977 on the 47th day after its release, the 29th. The cumulative revenue recorded was 131,628,172,206 won. This figure surpasses the 131,298,796,478 won earned by 'Crime City 2,' which held the highest revenue since the COVID-19 pandemic.
'Avatar: The Way of Water' is generating massive revenue worldwide. According to Box Office Mojo, the film surpassed a global cumulative revenue of 2.11658 billion dollars (2.6065 trillion won) on the 29th. It ranked 4th in worldwide box office, overtaking 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens,' which earned 2.07131 billion dollars (2.5508 trillion won).
The distributor viewed this box office success as "demonstrating the continuous demand for special format screenings of 'Avatar: The Way of Water'." They added, "It ranked first in box office revenue for IMAX and Dolby Cinema in Korea, and second worldwide in IMAX box office revenue, so the global success is expected to continue for the time being."
The film is a sequel to 'Avatar,' which was released in 2009 and surpassed 10 million viewers. It tells the story of the ruthless threats faced by the family formed by Jake Sully and Neytiri on the planet Pandora, and the long journey they must undertake to survive.
