Gangwon-do, "18 Cities and Counties, 94% Progress in Resolving Major Issues"

Secured 302.1 Billion KRW for 24 Projects This Year
Resolved 93 out of 99 Current and Strategic Tasks

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangwon Province announced on the 31st that "there were a total of 99 local government issues and strategic tasks in 18 cities and counties in the second half of last year, of which 93 have been resolved or are being properly implemented."


According to the province, the largest portion consisted of 34 tasks requesting reflection in government and provincial project plans, followed by 24 tasks for expanding social infrastructure such as roads, 16 for budget support, 14 for attracting companies and institutions, and 11 for reflecting special provisions in the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Act.

The proposed tasks are strategic tasks of cities and counties to realize the vision of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, with 4 tasks resolved and 89 tasks being properly implemented within six months of the 8th local government administration.


▲ Establishment of a plan to support hosting the Gangneung ITS General Assembly and inclusion of budget for infrastructure construction ▲ Administrative procedure support for the construction of correctional facilities in Taebaek City ▲ Addition of lettuce to crop disaster insurance in Hoengseong County ▲ Reflection of provincial budget incentives for businesses favoring military personnel in common border area cities and counties have been resolved.


In particular, through the 'Go! One-Team, City and County Field Meetings,' joint responses with government ministries and the National Assembly secured 302.1 billion KRW for 24 tasks in the 2023 budget.


125 billion KRW was reflected in the provincial budget for early completion of Local Road No. 460 in Yanggu County, expansion of Local Road No. 407 in Hwacheon County, and alignment improvement of Local Road No. 444 in Hongcheon County, as well as 1 billion KRW for the purchase of Sokcho Port International Passenger Terminal.


The additionally secured national funds of 46 billion KRW were invested in 1 billion KRW for design services for the construction of the Seomyeon Bridge in Chuncheon, 700 million KRW for design services for the Gwangdeok Tunnel in Hwacheon, and 300 million KRW for preliminary feasibility studies for the extension of the Guri-Pocheon Expressway to Cheorwon.


Additionally, national funds cover ▲ 20 billion KRW for the construction of the semiconductor education center in Wonju ▲ 20.7 billion KRW for additional construction costs for the early completion of the East-West High-Speed Railway in Sokcho ▲ 1 billion KRW for design services for the Samcheok tourism and leisure RE100 New Deal Town ▲ 1 billion KRW for preliminary feasibility studies for the Olympic National Garden in Gariwangsan, Jeongseon County ▲ 300 million KRW for preliminary feasibility studies for the Korean Peninsula DMZ Biological Resource Center in Inje County ▲ and 1 billion KRW for the common scenic premium project in border areas.


The province and the 18 cities and counties will jointly respond to local government issues and strategic tasks, unify communication through the Department of Autonomous Administration for local issues, and regularly share information to strengthen problem-solving capabilities.


Kim Jin-tae, Governor of Gangwon Province, said, "The province and the 18 cities and counties are the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province One-Team to realize a future industry global city," adding, "Since last year, we have directly listened to the voices from the field in cities and counties and worked actively to secure national funds and achieve many results. Going forward, we will realize the 'future industry global city' Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province together with the 18 cities and counties."
