[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City, Jeonbuk Province, will fully implement the ‘Strategic Crop Direct Payment System’ to stabilize the income of farmers utilizing and managing rice paddies and to enhance the public value of agriculture and rural areas.
According to the city on the 30th, the Strategic Crop Direct Payment System is a policy aimed at stabilizing the income of farmers cultivating field crops and increasing the self-sufficiency rate of major field crops. It is promoted to correct the overproduction structure concentrated on rice and to increase the cultivation of wheat and soybeans, which have a high import dependency.
The strategic crop direct payment is an optional direct payment provided in addition to the basic public direct payment to farmers and agricultural corporations cultivating strategic crops in rice paddies.
Therefore, if food crops or forage crops are cultivated in winter, 500,000 KRW per hectare is paid; for summer soybeans and broken rice, 1,000,000 KRW; and for forage crops, 4,300,000 KRW is paid.
Additionally, if double cropping is done with winter wheat or forage crops and summer paddy soybeans or broken rice, an additional 1,000,000 KRW is paid.
However, broken rice is only paid for farmland designated as a production complex in 2023, and summer forage crops are only paid for plots where rice was cultivated in 2022 and forage crops are newly cultivated in summer 2023.
Applicants eligible are farmers and agricultural corporations, and applications can be submitted in person at the town or township office or the community service center where the farmland is located from February 15 to March 31.
Once registered as a payment recipient, after compliance inspection by the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service, the direct payment can be received in December.
A city official said, “Through the Strategic Crop Direct Payment System, rice price declines can be prevented without excessive government market intervention. In particular, it is expected to help improve farm income by replacing imported agricultural products with domestic ones, which have high import dependency.”
