[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] ResearchAlum on the 30th expected that Microsoft (MS), by investing $10 billion in OpenAI, would create synergy effects with Nuance Communications, a voice recognition specialized artificial intelligence (AI) company acquired in April 2021.
Nuance provides its flagship service, Dragon software, which uses AI deep learning to convert voice into text. It holds a dominant market share in the global healthcare market and automatically records conversations between doctors and patients. Nuance has provided foundational technology for Google’s voice search service and Apple’s Siri.
Researcher Seonghwan Choi of ResearchAlum explained, "There were various interpretations when MS acquired Nuance," adding, "Recently, MS revealed additional investment plans in OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, which is clarifying those questions."
He continued, "MS was already investing in OpenAI when it acquired Nuance," and "They clearly recognized the role MS would play in the forthcoming AI era."
Furthermore, he analyzed, "It is necessary to pay attention to MS’s investment moves," and "MS is likely planning a powerful service that combines ‘ChatGPT + voice recognition,’ which has not existed in the current market." He predicted, "The voice recognition platform market has grown at an average annual rate of 90.2% since 2020 and will reach $1.026 trillion by 2025."
Researcher Choi emphasized, "Vive Company is the only domestic firm that has secured business and technological capabilities similar to MS’s strategic direction of ‘ChatGPT (machine reading comprehension) + Nuance (voice recognition).’" He introduced, "Their AI language model ranked first in performance evaluation based on the Korean machine reading comprehension dataset ‘KorQuAD 1.0,’ surpassing Samsung SDS, LG Electronics, Hanwha Systems, and others."
He also explained, "Vive Company possesses top-level domestic technology not only in machine reading comprehension but also in voice recognition," adding, "Voice recognition technology is based on deep learning."
Researcher Choi described, "There are almost no competitors, including Naver, Kakao, and the three major telecom companies, in functions such as detection, prediction, and simulation," and "Based on this, they provided an ‘illegal debt collection detection solution’ that analyzes financial institution recording files with AI to check for abusive language or coercion."
