What’s the Story Behind the Applause for Seongdong-gu’s Personal Data Destruction Service? A scene of using the digital storage media destruction service at Seongdong District Office

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) has recently received positive feedback from residents for the digital storage media destruction service that has been implemented since February last year.

Digital devices used in daily life such as cell phones, computers, and laptops contain not only personal information like names and contact details but also sensitive information such as financial data and photos, making complete destruction of storage media essential.

The digital storage media destruction service operated by Seongdong-gu Office provides a complete destruction method that is physically irreversible, and can destroy various storage media including hard disks, cell phones, and external hard drives.

Additionally, the destroyed storage media waste is handed over to the Seoul Urban Metal Recovery Center, where metals are recycled, contributing to resource circulation.

Residents, as well as small business owners and employees located in Seongdong-gu, can apply through the district website or by visiting the district office, and about 700 storage media have been destroyed from February last year to the present.

Residents who used the service expressed positive reactions such as “I feel relieved because there is no worry about personal information leakage” and “I was worried about personal information when throwing away devices, but I didn’t know it could be destroyed in this way.”

Moreover, in August last year, Seongdong-gu installed document shredders in all community service centers to provide a ‘personal information document shredding service’ that allows anyone to conveniently destroy documents like resident registration certificates.

As a result, Seongdong-gu achieved first place among 25 autonomous districts in the ‘2022 Seoul Personal Information Protection Management Status Compliance Inspection’ hosted by Seoul City.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Protecting personal information is fundamental in the smart digital era,” and added, “We will continue to make efforts to safely protect residents’ personal information and create a trusted smart inclusive city, Seongdong.”
