Hwang Cheol-gyu, Former President of the International Association of Prosecutors, Elected Vice President of the World Jurists Association

60 Years Since Inception: UN Special Advisory Body... 5-Year Term Executive Board Vice Chair

[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] Hwang Cheol-gyu, former president of the International Association of Prosecutors, has been elected as the Vice President of the Executive Board of the World Jurist Association (WJA), a special advisory body to the UN.


According to the legal community on the 27th, the World Jurist Association elected former President Hwang as Vice President of the Executive Board for a five-year term. The World Jurist Association was launched in 1963, led by the United States, the United Kingdom, and others, with the goal of "realizing world peace through the rule of law." Currently, more than 3,000 former and current lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and law professors from 140 countries participate.


The Executive Board of the World Jurist Association consists of one president, one senior vice president, five vice presidents, a secretary-general, and executive directors, serving as the actual decision-making and executive body of the World Jurist Association.

The World Jurist Association holds the World Lawyers' Congress biennially, with the 28th Congress scheduled to be held this July at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA. South Korea previously hosted the 13th Congress in September 1987 in Seoul, led by the Korean Bar Association and others.


Additionally, the World Jurist Association awards the World Peace and Liberty Prize and the Honorary Medal, the highest honors in the global legal community, at the World Lawyers' Congress. Past recipients of the World Peace and Liberty Prize include former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill, former South African President Nelson Mandela, King Felipe VI of Spain, and former US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.


Former President Hwang was recognized for his contributions to the realization of global rule of law as president of the International Association of Prosecutors in 2021 and received the World Jurist Association Honorary Medal alongside presidents of the International Association of Judges and the American Bar Association.


Former President Hwang is regarded as an "international expert" within the prosecution, having served as Legal Cooperation Officer at the Permanent Mission to the UN, Head of the International Criminal Division at the Ministry of Justice, and Director of the International Cooperation Division at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office.
