[Interview] Jiwoo "Something Boils Inside Me When I Act"

Return to Home Screens After 5 Years Since 'Cheongchun Sidae 2'
Continued Success in 'Sobangseo Ok Police Station' Season 2

Jiwoo (Choi Ji-woo, 25) is an actress with a mysterious charm to her face. Her complexion is clear and pure like a blank canvas, but there is a playful hint at the corners of her lips and seriousness in her eyes. While she appears endlessly innocent, a sharp gaze reveals a glimpse of evil (惡). Such a multi-dimensional face is fertile ground for an actor.

Jiwoo gained attention by playing the lead role in the drama "Age of Youth 2" (2017), portraying the fresh excitement and sorrows of youth. Actively working at the time, she took a break to recharge and has returned after five years with a more mature presence. When we met recently at the Asia Economy building in Jung-gu, Seoul, Jiwoo said, "During my break, I diligently attended university classes I had missed due to work and took care of my pet dog. I felt the preciousness of life enjoyed as a human, not just as an actress."

Officially, she took a pause after the film "Intimate Strangers" (2018). In 2021, she also appeared on stage in the play "Makeup Room." Jiwoo found it remarkable to have consecutive collaborations with PD Shin Kyung-soo. "I worked with PD Shin on 'Makeup Room' and then on 'Fire Station Next to Police Station.' He entrusted me with attractive roles in both projects. He is like a benefactor. PD Shin watched every performance of the play. I was moved by his passion and dedication."

"Makeup Room" is a tragicomedy set in the makeup room of a theater where "The Seagull" is being performed. It depicts actors' passion for the stage, their yearning for roles, and regrets about life. The original work by Shimizu Kunio is known for its social and literary qualities. Jiwoo recalled, "Performing in a play about actors chasing their dreams, I empathized and found comfort. It was my first time in theater, so I had many shortcomings, but I learned a lot."

From November 30 last year to the 30th of last month, Jiwoo played Sergeant Bong Anna of the police station's forensic science team in the SBS Friday-Saturday drama "Fire Station Next to Police Station." Her character is highly skilled in various investigative equipment and cutting-edge forensic techniques, proficient in both scientific investigation and digital forensics. She said, "Anna is a charming character who loves her job and executes it smartly. I prepared by watching many films and online content featuring professionals as main characters." She added, "I mostly played student roles before, so I am grateful and felt special to be cast as an adult professional."

Jiwoo also expressed gratitude to actor Kim Rae-won, with whom she worked closely on the drama. "He kindly gave me a lot of advice. Since it was my first time playing a professional role, I was lacking, but he made me feel comfortable acting on set. I also learned from his attitude of considering the entire drama while acting as the lead actor," she said.

"Fire Station Next to Police Station" was planned as two seasons, each with 12 episodes. Following the conclusion of season 1 last month, season 2 is scheduled to air in July. Currently busy filming season 2, Jiwoo said, "We worked hard filming season 1 last summer, and now it's already winter as we shoot season 2?it doesn't feel real. I'm proud and happy that the drama is loved. We're working hard on season 2, which will be filmed until May or June. The atmosphere on set is really good."

Jiwoo added, "The last episode ended with a cliffhanger that piqued curiosity, so viewers will be able to immerse themselves from the beginning of season 2." She hinted, "There are many fun episodes and the fast-paced development makes it refreshing to watch. Season 2 will probably be even more enjoyable. Continuing from the previous season, the cooperation between firefighters and police in solving cases is portrayed impressively. Please look forward to the refreshing moments that will unfold in every episode."

She has also completed filming the Netflix original series "Gyeongseong Creature," scheduled for release this year. Jiwoo said, "The script was really fun. I wanted to do well and put a lot of effort into filming." She continued, "It's a creature story filmed all over the country. I didn't know Korea had so many beautiful places. There were many aesthetically outstanding locations, so it was fun to explore. I think viewers will like it too." She added, "With more OTT platforms, many quality works are being produced. Binge-watching is enjoyable. I watched 'The Glory' all in one day. As a viewer, I'm also looking forward to 'Gyeongseong Creature.'"

Work is the driving force behind her growth. Using her hiatus as a stepping stone, Jiwoo has opened the second act of her career, and youth is 'now.' "When I work, something boils inside me. These days, being on set makes me feel alive and happy. Maybe because I rested for a long time, my thirst for projects is great. From now on, I want to work hard without resting. I want to take on various roles. I want to be an actress who conveys good energy and influence, and more than that, I want to be a good person."
