First Acquisition by a Domestic Cloud Service Provider
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Naver Cloud announced on the 26th that it has become the first domestic cloud service provider (CSP) to obtain the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) certification.
CBPR is a global privacy certification system that evaluates and certifies companies' personal information protection systems to support the free and secure transfer of personal data among APEC member countries. In Korea, it is overseen by the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA). Based on the APEC Privacy 9 Principles, it comprehensively evaluates and certifies personal information management systems, personal data collection, use/provision/consignment of personal data, data subject rights, integrity, and protection measures. Nine countries including Korea, the United States, Japan, and Singapore participate in the certification. Over 40 companies such as Naver, Apple, Cisco, IBM, HP, and Yahoo Japan have obtained the certification.
Naver Cloud explained that by obtaining the CBPR certification for its cloud services, it has been externally recognized for establishing and effectively operating a global-standard personal information protection system.
Among domestic cloud providers, Naver Cloud, which has the largest number of overseas regions in major APEC member countries, has laid the foundation for active global business expansion by verifying its capabilities for secure personal data transfer and processing through this certification.
In particular, Japan and Singapore recognize the protection level of CBPR-certified companies according to their national laws, allowing free cross-border transfer of personal data, which enables more efficient business operations when partnering with companies located in those countries.
Choi Won-hyuk, Head of Security Operations and Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) at Naver Cloud, said, “Following Naver, Naver Cloud has become the second company in Korea to be internationally verified for having an advanced personal information protection system,” adding, “We will continue to strengthen the excellence of Naver Cloud’s security and strive to provide trustworthy services.”
