In China, criticism is mounting after a video surfaced showing a daughter-in-law swinging a blunt weapon at her mother-in-law in her 80s, telling her to leave the house on the eve of the Lunar New Year (Chunje), while the son did nothing to stop it and even appeared to condone the act.

On the 25th, a video titled "Daughter-in-law hitting 83-year-old mother-in-law with a stick on Lunar New Year's Eve" was posted on the Chinese social networking service (SNS) Weibo.

According to the released video, a young woman swung a stick at the elderly woman, who, after being struck on the head, eventually collapsed to the ground. The man who did not intervene but only watched then kicked the fallen elderly woman lightly before leaving the scene.

The person who posted the video identified himself as the grandson of the victimized grandmother. He said, "This happened while I briefly left the house to set off fireworks on the night before Chunje," and added, "The perpetrator is my father's third wife."

He continued, "The stepmother, who lived with the grandmother, demanded that her mother-in-law leave the house," and explained the situation: "The stepmother kept pointing fingers and cursing at the grandmother who was driven out of the house, then hit her with a stick that was standing by the fence."

The grandson also said, "My father, who is 10 years older than the stepmother, does whatever she says," and "The grandmother was bleeding from her head and was eventually hospitalized after receiving more than ten stitches, but her condition is not good. We have no intention of compromising with the stepmother."

Netizens who saw the video expressed critical reactions such as, "Why did the son do nothing while watching his mother being hit?", "An elderly person being beaten by her daughter-in-law during the holiday.
