'Statistical Analysis of Emergency Medical Services: 157,930 Dispatches'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] In 2022, Jeonbuk Fire Department was dispatched for emergency medical services once every 3.3 minutes.


According to the '2022 Emergency Medical Service Activity Statistical Analysis' announced by Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters on the 25th, Jeonbuk Fire Department's 119 EMS teams consisting of 107 units, one fire aviation unit, and 963 paramedics responded to 157,903 dispatches last year, transporting 89,855 patients.

Compared to 2021, the number of dispatches increased by 10,418 cases (10.2%), transports increased by 10,675 cases (13.8%), and the number of transported patients increased by 10,399 (13.1%).


The largest age group among all transported patients was those aged 80 and above, accounting for 22.2%, and the most common location of patient occurrence was the residence, at 65.8%.


The types of patient occurrences were disease (69.5%), non-disease (29.2%), and others (1.3%), with disease patients being the majority.


Among non-disease patients (29.2%), the breakdown was accident injuries (63.3%), traffic accidents (31.1%), and non-traumatic injuries (5.7%) in that order.


There were 1,690 transported cardiac arrest patients, and 773 transported severe trauma patients.


By age group of transported patients, those aged 80 and above numbered 19,970 (22.2%), those in their 70s numbered 18,323 (20.4%), and those in their 60s numbered 15,530 (17.3%).


Patients aged 60 and above accounted for about 60% of all transported patients, indicating that elderly patients are occurring frequently due to population aging in the Jeonbuk region.


The most common patient occurrence location was the residence with 59,133 patients (65.8%), followed by roads with 9,776 patients (10.9%), and medical-related facilities with 4,800 patients (5.3%). The number of patients transported to medical-related facilities increased by 54.8% compared to the previous year due to inter-facility transfers for COVID-19 confirmed and suspected patients.


By fire station, Jeonju Wansan Fire Station (11 ambulances) had the highest number of dispatches with 26,773 cases (17%), followed by Gunsan Fire Station (14 ambulances) with 21,875 cases (13.9%), and Iksan Fire Station (14 ambulances) with 21,833 cases (13.8%).


Choi Mincheol, head of Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters, said, “For the development of emergency medical services, communication and feedback with residents are most important,” and added, “We will strive to improve quality through emergency medical service statistical analysis to contribute to public safety and life protection.”
