[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Microsoft (MS) is making an additional investment in OpenAI, the developer of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot 'ChatGPT'.
On the 23rd (local time), according to Bloomberg News and others, MS is negotiating an investment of $10 billion (12.3 trillion KRW) over several years in OpenAI. This is the third partnership agreement between MS and OpenAI, following those in 2019 and 2021.
Satya Nadella, MS CEO, confirmed the investment on his blog that day, saying, "We have partnered with OpenAI" and "This is for the shared ambition to advance cutting-edge AI research and make AI a new platform." However, he did not disclose the specific amount.
Through the investment in OpenAI, MS expects to strengthen the capabilities of its cloud service Azure, participate in large-scale supercomputing, and help create new AI-based experiences. Recently, MS launched the 'Azure OpenAI Service,' which allows the latest AI models such as DALL·E 2 to be used on Azure, and plans to add ChatGPT functionality soon.
Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Anurag Rana said, "This investment will be key for MS to expand its cloud business," and added, "It may also help MS narrow the gap with Amazon's cloud service AWS."
OpenAI is a nonprofit company established in 2015 by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla; Peter Thiel, president of Clarium Capital; Reid Hoffman, chairman of LinkedIn; and Sam Altman, president of Y Combinator (currently CEO of OpenAI), with the goal of developing 'digital intelligence' that benefits humanity.
