According to reports, temperatures measured at some observation points in Mohe were minus 50 degrees on the 20th, minus 50.9 degrees on the 21st, and then dropped to minus 53 degrees around 7 a.m. on the 22nd (local time), breaking the record for the lowest temperature since meteorological observations began in China (previous record was minus 52.3 degrees in 1969).
Located south of the China-Russia border, Mohe is known as the coldest region in China, with an average annual temperature around minus 3 degrees Celsius. It is said that snow begins to fall every May, and snow and ice can be seen for about eight months each year.
Meanwhile, Chinese meteorological authorities issued a level 1 cold wave warning (the highest is level 4) with a blue alert on the 23rd, forecasting that temperatures in some parts of Northeast China and areas south of the Yangtze River are expected to drop by about 12 to 14 degrees from the morning of the 23rd to the morning of the 25th.
