Police to Add More Eco-Friendly Vehicles This Year... Operating Over 1,850 Units

[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The police will increase the number of eco-friendly police vehicles to about 1,850 this year to achieve carbon neutrality and will also expand charging facilities for these vehicles.

The National Police Agency announced on the 23rd that it will promote a plan to transition to eco-friendly vehicles to achieve the government task of "complete transition to zero-emission vehicles by 2035." A total of 656 eco-friendly vehicles will be additionally supplied this year. Specifically, 262 patrol cars (217 electric, 25 hydrogen electric), 391 electric passenger cars for official use, and 3 hydrogen electric buses will be added. As of December last year, out of 15,480 police vehicles, 1,195 were eco-friendly, accounting for a 7.7% ownership rate. The police aim to increase the ownership rate of eco-friendly vehicles to over 10% with this additional supply this year.

In line with the expansion of eco-friendly vehicles, the police also plan to increase fast charging facilities. In cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, a total of 273 additional charging stations will be installed this year. Last year, the police also expanded 140 fast charging stations in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.

Furthermore, the police are working on improving patrol cars into "mobile offices." To this end, they plan to pilot the installation of laptops and other devices in patrol cars this year to enable the use of various inquiry systems. They will also pilot a minivan-type command vehicle. Unlike the existing sedan-type, the command vehicle will be enlarged with a mini van to serve as an on-site command post, according to the blueprint.
