The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced on the 23rd at midnight that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 9,227, bringing the total to 30,008,756. This marks 3 years and 3 days since the first confirmed case in South Korea on January 20, 2020.
The official number of confirmed cases exceeded 10 million on March 22, 2022, 26 months after the first case. About four months later, on August 2, 2022, the total reached 20 million. It took approximately five and a half months to go from 20 million to 30 million.
According to the statistics site Worldometer, South Korea is the seventh country worldwide to surpass 30 million confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. The cumulative death toll stands at 33,235, ranking 34th globally.
Meanwhile, the 9,227 new confirmed cases reported on this day are the lowest in 105 days since October 10, when there were 8,973 cases.
The daily new confirmed cases falling below 10,000 also marks the first time in 105 days.
Among the new cases, 60 were imported, 10 fewer than the previous day. Of these, 29 cases (48.3%) were arrivals from China. Domestic community transmission cases numbered 9,167.
The number of confirmed cases by region (including imported cases) is as follows: Gyeonggi 2,356, Seoul 1,439, Gyeongbuk 515, Gyeongnam 664, Daegu 342, Incheon 543, Chungnam 276, Busan 581, Jeonbuk 379, Gwangju 292, Jeonnam 392, Chungbuk 319, Daejeon 335, Ulsan 210, Gangwon 303, Jeju 209, Sejong 58, Quarantine 14.
The number of critically ill patients is 450, 10 fewer than the previous day. The number of deaths reported the previous day was 26, two more than the 24 reported the day before. The cumulative fatality rate is 0.11%.
