Pohang City Lifelong Learning Center 10th Anniversary, Preparing for a New Takeoff Pohang City Lifelong Learning Center.

To mark the new year, the city plans to operate various lifelong learning courses to reflect the diversified lifelong learning demands of citizens by expanding customized lifelong education programs for each life cycle and preparing differentiated content.

This year, the city will establish educational programs that can strengthen citizens' awareness in the environment and safety fields, such as the carbon neutrality environment supporters training course and special lectures on disaster and disaster response, while enhancing employment and start-up training courses and expanding night and weekend classes to operate more substantial regular courses.

In addition, as the demand and necessity for lifelong education for the disabled increase, the city plans to create a disability-friendly lifelong learning foundation to prepare for the designation of a lifelong learning city for the disabled by the Ministry of Education in 2024 and to prepare for the Gyeongbuk Province Lifelong Learning Expo.

The Pohang Lifelong Learning Center has operated various educational programs through regular courses in the first and second half of the year and seasonal special lectures every year, but due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, non-face-to-face content such as lifelong learning via TV, YouTube lectures, and Korea Cyber Promotion Agency online courses has been expanded, and the end-of-course exhibition has been suspended, resulting in reduced operation.

However, since last year, the regular courses have been strengthened from 12 weeks to 16 weeks, night and weekend classes for office workers and retirees have been expanded, and environmental education has been reinforced by operating the first carbon neutrality supporters training course in Gyeongbuk Province.

For the first time nationwide, the ‘Pohang City Senior Abacus Competition’ was registered as an official record in the field of the oldest abacus competition by the Korea Record Institute, and education to revitalize lifelong learning at the village level continues, such as operating the Cheongnimdae Happiness Learning Center installed in the Marine 1st Division military housing and the visiting neighborhood senior citizen university.

Along with this, Mayor Kang-deok Lee was elected as the representative of the Gyeongbuk region of the National Lifelong Learning City Council, being recognized as a representative lifelong learning city representing Gyeongbuk Province in name and reality.

Based on these achievements, the city received the Excellence Award in the ‘2022 Gyeongsangbuk-do Lifelong Education Policy Evaluation,’ and on the 18th, it achieved results by winning awards in all categories at the Korea Lifelong Learning City Good Policy Awards, including the Good Policy Award, Partnership Award, and Lifelong Educator Award.

Kim Hyun-gu, director of the Pohang Lifelong Learning Center, said, “On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the opening, we will show an upgraded Lifelong Learning Center in terms of programs and facilities,” and added, “We will strive to create a sustainable lifelong education city where all citizens are happy throughout this year.”
