The forum, held on the 19th at H Hotel Sejong City in Cheongju, Chungbuk, was attended by five universities...
According to Changwon National University, the results of the Ministry of Health and Welfare's healthcare workforce survey released in July last year and the policy tasks and necessity for expanding medical personnel in Gyeongnam announced by the Gyeongnam Research Institute in December last year revealed a shortage of doctors and medical school quotas in Gyeongnam.
The university stated that as of 2020, the total number of doctors nationwide was 99,492, of which Gyeongnam accounted for 5.2%, or 5,216 doctors. The number of doctors per 100,000 people nationwide was 193.8, while in Gyeongnam it was 156.5.
As of the end of 2021, the medical school quota at Gyeongsang National University in Gyeongnam was 76, representing 2.5% of the national medical school quota of 3,058. The medical school quota per 10,000 people was 0.59 nationwide and 0.23 in Gyeongnam.
The universities argued that medical schools should be established in national university regions in medically underserved areas to ▲resolve regional medical disparities ▲pursue public value as national universities ▲increase medical school quotas to improve the quality of life of local residents ▲and foster local public medical personnel.
President Lee Hoyoung and the presidents of the five universities stated, "We will continue to cooperate with national universities in medically underserved areas nationwide and work towards the establishment of medical schools, a long-standing wish of local communities," adding, "We will fulfill our responsibilities as national universities representing the region and improve the quality of life for local residents."
