Jeju West Fire Station Prevents Casualties with Single-Alarm Detector

The reporter, who was sleeping at home, heard the sound of the standalone smoke detector from the kitchen and, upon checking the house, found the utility room filled with black smoke. They reported it to 119, and the prompt safety measures taken by the emergency fire crew prevented further damage.

The standalone smoke detector is the minimum preventive measure that can save lives in the event of a fire. When smoke is detected during a fire, it emits a sound that residents can hear, helping them recognize the fire quickly.

It also minimizes casualties in fire situations that occur while people are asleep late at night.

The Western Fire Station has supplied residential fire safety equipment to all households in the jurisdiction by collaborating with local social enterprises and organizations. From 2016 to 2022 (over seven years), they received donations of about 10,000 sets of residential fire safety equipment (one fire extinguisher and one detector per set) and completed installation in about 10,000 fire-vulnerable households.

Chief Kim Young-ho said, “The standalone smoke detector is an essential residential facility that helps early fire detection and reduces damage. We urge everyone to install standalone smoke detectors and fire extinguishers to protect the precious lives of their families and neighbors.”
