On the 14th, Mr. D, a man in his 20s who was prosecuted for abuse of power and mistreatment such as ordering a junior soldier to perform the so-called 'Wonsan Bombing'?forcing his head into a mattress?or slapping him during his Marine Corps service, was sentenced to a suspended prison term.
Judge Lee Ji-hee of the Criminal Division 7 at Changwon District Court sentenced former Marine Mr. D (22), charged with abuse of power and other offenses, to six months in prison with a one-year suspension. Mr. D was also ordered to perform 80 hours of community service.
Mr. D was prosecuted for 13 instances of abuse and 6 instances of assault from mid-December 2021 to the end of January last year, including waking up sleeping junior soldiers during his service in Ongjin-gun, Incheon, shining a flashlight into their eyes, forcing them to press their heads into a mattress for one minute to prevent sleep, and slapping them multiple times.
The court explained, "In the special environment of the military, Mr. D abused his senior position to commit multiple assaults, abuse of power, and mistreatment against junior soldiers, which is a serious offense." The court added, "Considering that the victims do not wish for punishment against Mr. D and that he is a first-time offender with no prior criminal record, the sentence was determined."
