No Daytime Drunk Driving! ... Gyeongnam Police Agency Announces Daytime Alcohol Checkpoints

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency will conduct a surprise mass crackdown on drunk driving during daytime hours on the 18th.

The provincial police agency announced on the 17th that the crackdown aims to prevent the atmosphere of drunk driving and accidents following the full lifting of social distancing and the increase in various gatherings.

All police stations in the province will mobilize traffic and local police officers as well as the police mobile unit to the fullest extent to conduct spot mobile crackdowns near major restaurant districts and downtown entertainment areas.

The highway patrol unit will also work to catch drunk driving vehicles at tollgate entrances and exits, and the provincial police’s undercover patrol crackdown team will join the frontline police station crackdown teams.

The crackdown will use non-contact breathalyzers to minimize contact, and equipment will be disinfected frequently to pay close attention to COVID-19 prevention measures amid concerns of resurgence.

According to the provincial police agency, during the year-end and New Year’s drunk driving crackdown period that has been in effect since last December, there have been 960 drunk driving cases caught in the province so far.

This is an increase of 62 cases, or 6.9%, compared to last year, while drunk driving traffic accidents have decreased by 14 cases, or 14.3%, to 84 cases compared to last year.

The provincial police agency plans to continue surprise mass crackdowns on drunk driving during daytime hours until the end of January.

A provincial police agency official said, “During the year-end and New Year’s drunk driving crackdown period, surprise mass crackdowns will be conducted day and night,” adding, “Drunk driving is a serious crime that destroys not only individuals but also families and society, so please never do it and do not forget this.”
