[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province's '4th Seasonal Fine Dust Management System,' first implemented in December last year, has shown significant results.
According to Gyeonggi Province on the 17th, as a result of conducting crackdowns on the operation of Grade 5 emission vehicles in the province during the first month of implementation in December last year, the number of violations detected decreased by 58% compared to the same period the previous year, and fine particulate matter decreased by 28%. During this period, a total of 4,954 cases (2,534 vehicles) violated the operation restrictions, of which 2,829 cases were vehicles registered in Gyeonggi Province, accounting for 57.1%.
The restriction on operating Grade 5 vehicles in December last year was enforced for a total of 22 days excluding weekends. The average number of violations detected per day was 225 cases, which is about 58% less than the average daily violations (537 cases) in December 2021 when the 3rd Seasonal Management System was implemented. Also, the average daily traffic volume of Grade 5 vehicles was 14,662, a 34% decrease from the previous year (22,158). The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) also decreased by 28% (7㎍/㎥) compared to the same month of the previous year, measuring 18㎍/㎥.
The province excludes vehicles owned by basic livelihood security recipients, lower-income groups, and small business owners among Grade 5 vehicles without emission reduction devices from the imposition of fines after hearing their opinions before imposing fines on violating vehicles.
Additionally, the province plans to provide focused management such as guidance on emission reduction measures for vehicles subject to fines.
Kim Dong-sung, head of the Fine Dust Countermeasures Division of the province, urged, "To make Gyeonggi Province safe from fine dust, please refrain from operating old diesel vehicles during the seasonal fine dust management period and promptly complete emission reduction measures."
