Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Holds Public Hearing on the 4th Basic Plan for Multicultural Family Policy

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family will hold a public hearing on the 17th to establish the "4th Basic Plan for Multicultural Family Policy (2023-2027)" that will guide multicultural family policies for the next five years.

This public hearing will be conducted online to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and aims to gather a wide range of opinions through a live broadcast on the Korea Women's Development Institute's YouTube channel.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, together with the Korea Women's Development Institute, has diagnosed past policy achievements and changes in the policy environment through research and expert consultations, and reflected diverse opinions from policy demanders such as multicultural family participation meetings to prepare the "4th Basic Plan for Multicultural Family Policy (Draft) (2023-2027)."

The draft plan sets the vision of "a harmonious society growing together with multicultural families" and establishes goals such as "creating a stable living environment for multicultural families" and "ensuring equal starting points for multicultural youth."

To realize this, the plan promotes key tasks including "customized support by settlement period," "academic and career support by children's growth stages," "human rights protection and elimination of discrimination," and "strengthening the support foundation for multicultural families."

In particular, reflecting the new government's national agenda, emphasis was placed on strengthening customized support by growth stages so that children of multicultural families can emerge as talents in our society.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family plans to comprehensively review opinions presented at the public hearing and from related organizations, reflect them in the basic plan, and finalize and announce it in March after deliberation by the "Multicultural Family Policy Committee," chaired by the Prime Minister.

Lee Ki-soon, Vice Minister of Gender Equality and Family, said, "Recently, the number of school-age children from multicultural families has rapidly increased, leading to a rise in demand for support related to learning and career paths, and we are feeling changes in the policy environment and demand." He added, "Through this public hearing, we will collect various opinions from related experts and the field to supplement and establish a basic plan that meets the needs on the ground."
