Yeosu-si, Spotlighted as the Winter 'Jeonjihunryeonji Mecca'

Over 140 Teams, Approximately 1,900 Visitors

City Focuses Administrative Efforts on Service Provision

[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] Jeonnam Yeosu City (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it is receiving high praise as a winter training site, and despite fierce competition among local governments to attract winter training teams, inquiries from national sports organizations are pouring in.

According to Yeosu City, since last December, about 100 members of 19 yacht teams representing 6 cities and provinces, as well as 22 teams including national elementary, middle, and high school baseball teams and Kyung Hee University basketball team, totaling about 300 athletes, have been focusing on training.

Furthermore, it is expected that about 100 teams, approximately 1,500 athletes, will visit Yeosu by February.

The reasons why Yeosu City is spotlighted as a training site include ▲mild four seasons with rare snowfall in winter ▲well-established sports facility infrastructure due to hosting large-scale events such as the National Sports Festival and the Gwangju World Swimming Championships ▲and convenient access within 3 hours from the metropolitan area.

In particular, as a ‘southern coast hub city’ visited by 13 million tourists annually, the satisfaction of training teams is high because they can enjoy culture, tourism, and experiences along with training.

Additionally, Yeosu City and the Sports Council are increasing satisfaction by providing various incentives and events such as ▲full support for public sports facility rental fees ▲offering representative local specialties like Yeosu Gat Kimchi and snacks ▲and supporting tourism and experience expenses for teams above a certain size.

Myung Kyung-sik, chairman of the Yeosu City Sports Council, said, “We will spare no effort to provide the best support so that athletes visiting our city can focus solely on training,” and added, “We will continue to prepare various support measures with Yeosu City so that even more teams can visit Yeosu in the future.”

In 2022, Yeosu City attracted 58 teams and about 36,000 winter training athletes, and was selected as an excellent city within Jeonnam Province.
