[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Incheon branch of the Democratic Party of Korea is launching a task force focused on ending the Sudogwon Landfill Site and securing an alternative landfill site.

On the 16th, the party announced that it has formed a Sudogwon Landfill Site Termination TF, chaired by National Assembly member Shin Dong-geun (Incheon Seo-gu Eul), with 12 city and district council members participating, and has begun its activities.

The TF plans to urge the four-party consultative body of the Sudogwon Landfill Site (Incheon City, Seoul City, Gyeonggi Province, and the Ministry of Environment) to promptly secure an alternative landfill site and present a roadmap for the termination of the Sudogwon Landfill Site, while also monitoring Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok’s pledge to end the landfill site within his term.

In the future, the TF will form an advisory committee of private experts and conduct site visits, discussions, and public hearings.

Kim Gyo-heung, the party branch chairman, stated, "About 900 tons of household waste have been landfilled in Incheon daily for over 30 years, and although the Sudogwon Landfill Site Corporation has been implementing the 'Sudogwon Landfill Site Total Input Quota System' to reduce household waste by 5% annually, the amount of household waste brought into the landfill from Seoul has increased every year over the past five years."

He added, "Environmental issues are a historical mission for future generations," emphasizing, "The four-party consultative body consisting of the heads of Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon local governments and the Ministry of Environment must present a concrete termination plan and secure an alternative landfill site."

TF Chairman Shin Dong-geun also stated, "We can never accept if they neglect the four-party agreement on 'waste reduction and alternative landfill creation' and only propose clauses for additional landfill use," adding, "The Sudogwon Landfill Site must be terminated based on environmental justice principles such as the principle of processing waste at the source."
