[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province will establish a 'Municipal Animal Hospital' within this year.
In addition, Seongnam City will promote 15 projects including a feasibility study for creating a Pet Welfare Town, installation of a dog playground, basic fee support for pets of socioeconomically vulnerable groups, adoption fee support for lost and abandoned animals, and pet culture classes.
In particular, the municipal animal hospital to be established this year is expected to reduce economic burdens and prevent the occurrence of infectious diseases by lowering medical expenses for vulnerable groups and preventing zoonotic diseases such as rabies.
The city also plans to build a Pet Welfare Town with construction targeted to start in 2024. The Welfare Town will include an animal protection center, an education center (kindergarten), a hospice center, a playground, and a pet caf?. After securing the site and completing administrative procedures, the city plans to finish the feasibility study in the first half of this year.
Additionally, one pet playground will be installed within this year at Hwangsong Park in Jungwon-gu to replace the pet playground at Dandae Park in Sujeong-gu, which was closed in 2021.
The city also plans to create jobs through support for the pet industry in areas such as medical care, tourism, and food, and further aims to establish a pet industry cluster based on an animal welfare hub space.
