[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The police are stepping up their crackdown in preparation for the '3rd Nationwide Simultaneous Cooperative Association Head Election' scheduled for the 8th of next month.
According to the police on the 16th, the National Police Agency will form a 'Special Investigation Team for Election Crimes' at local police stations nationwide the following day to fully activate the crackdown system. Prior to the formation of the special team, the police investigated a total of 31 cases involving 56 individuals related to this election, and among them, 5 were referred to the prosecution. The police added that investigations are ongoing for another 42 individuals.
The police have designated ▲bribery ▲dissemination of false information ▲illegal election interference as the 'three major election crimes' and plan to strictly crack down on them. Especially ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, the police anticipate that gifts or money may be offered under the pretext of holiday greetings or New Year gifts, or that illicit election campaigning may take place. A police official urged, "Please actively report various illegal activities such as bribery, which frequently occur during entrusted election processes, to 112 or the nearest police station."
