The Chinese government recently announced that approximately 60,000 COVID-19 related deaths were recorded in medical institutions over the past month.
On the 14th, Zhao Yahui, Director of the Medical Policy Department of the National Health Commission (NHC), stated at a State Council joint epidemic prevention press conference that the cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths in medical institutions nationwide from the 8th of last month to the 12th of this month was 59,938.
Among the deceased, 5,503 people (9.2%) died from respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 infection, while 54,435 people (90.8%) died due to a combination of pre-existing underlying conditions and COVID-19 infection.
These figures do not include deaths that occurred at home, so the actual number of deaths is estimated to be higher.
