Suncheon City Establishes Dedicated Department for Carbon Neutrality Implementation, 'Climate Energy Division'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced that it has established the Climate Energy Division for the first time in the Honam region in January and is taking a leading role in responding to the climate crisis and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Since the city does not have large-scale greenhouse gas emission facilities like neighboring cities, it is accelerating energy transition and efficiency, as well as expanding the supply of eco-friendly vehicles, in accordance with the regional characteristics where the most greenhouse gases are emitted from the road transportation sector.

The Climate Energy Division is responsible for tasks such as ▲ expanding the supply of solar power suitable for the ecological capital Suncheon to promote renewable energy transition and energy efficiency projects ▲ establishing an energy self-reliance foundation through solar power generation projects in public institutions ▲ realizing energy decentralization by holding citizen education and forums related to climate and energy.

Additionally, it is promoting various sectors including ▲ expanding carbon sinks through management and conservation of biosphere reserve areas ▲ reducing greenhouse gases and fine dust by supplying eco-friendly vehicles to the private sector and building charging infrastructure ▲ early retirement of old diesel vehicles and supply of eco-friendly boilers ▲ reducing greenhouse gases through citizen participation by creating excellent green apartments and operating the Carbon Point System ▲ expanding energy welfare projects for vulnerable groups.

A Suncheon City official stated, “We ask for the citizens’ great interest and active cooperation in Suncheon’s climate energy policies.” He added, “The climate crisis is an imminent reality, and carbon neutrality is inevitable. We will take the lead in making Suncheon a first-class city by establishing clear visions and goals and formulating concrete strategies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.”
