[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] LS Cable announced on the 12th that it will expand its aluminum new material business together with its affiliate LS ALSCO. They explained that aluminum is about 40% lighter than traditional copper, making it ideal for the lightweight trend in the electric vehicle market.

On the 12th, LS Cable stated that the high-strength aluminum new material was assigned the unique alloy number AA8031 by the Aluminum Association in the United States.

The strength, which had been pointed out as a drawback of existing aluminum materials, was enhanced by more than 40%, and flexibility was improved. The disadvantage of reduced conductivity when increasing aluminum strength was also addressed.

LS Cable expects the aluminum market, which is lighter than copper, to grow. Changing the conductor of automotive wires from copper to aluminum reduces the wire weight by more than 40%. The wire weight per vehicle decreases from 25kg to about 15%, resulting in improved fuel efficiency.

They plan to expand supply to electric vehicles and wind turbines in collaboration with LS ALSCO, a specialist in high-strength aluminum materials.

Kim Sangkyum, a research fellow at LS Cable’s Basic Technology Research Institute, said, "Unlike patents, AA requires meeting commercialization criteria and duration, so it is not easy to obtain. AA8031 has proven its quality by being commercialized in Hyundai and Kia vehicle wires since 2019."

AA is an organization that provides global standards to companies and policymakers. It has assigned over 500 unique numbers worldwide. In Asia, Japan received 14, Korea 3, and China 3. LS Cable holds all three unique numbers assigned to Korea.
