[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Lee Kang-deok, mayor of Pohang City, currently visiting the United States, focused on the next-generation innovative system devised by Elon Musk and concretized future strategy plans linked to attracting a Gigafactory.
On the 8th (local time), Mayor Lee Kang-deok and his delegation visited the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) in the United States, where 'CES 2023' was held, personally experienced the Vegas Loop, an underground tunnel futuristic transportation system, and met with representatives of The Boring Company, the operator, actively seeking promotion strategies linked to attracting Tesla.
The Vegas Loop is an innovative futuristic mobility system directly devised by Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla, to alleviate severe urban traffic congestion in the United States.
The Loop connects major locations such as the South Hall and West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, where CES was held, through tunnels, and uses electric vehicles to travel at high speed. The Las Vegas authorities plan to connect about 48 km of downtown underground with over 50 Vegas Loops by 2029.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok and City Council Chairman Baek In-gyu visited the Vegas Loop station and personally experienced the Loop.
Mayor Lee said, "The moment an idea that was only possible in imagination becomes reality can change the future industrial landscape," adding, "We will secure Pohang City's innovative growth engine through bold challenges in step with the rapidly changing times."
At the same time, on-site, he met with Matt Weber, Chief Technology Officer of The Boring Company, and held in-depth discussions on Pohang City's 'Tesla Gigafactory' operational status and investment conditions, continuing comprehensive global business collaboration to take the lead in the full-scale Tesla attraction battle.

The Boring Company, the constructor and operator of the Vegas Loop, was established by Elon Musk to develop next-generation mobility and is receiving great attention in the global mobility market. It is leading the way in proposing a 'futuristic innovative transportation network' with keywords such as solving transportation problems based on Tesla and restoring urban landscapes.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, "Attracting the Tesla Gigafactory will be a game changer for domestic and international industries and the employment market," adding, "Since this is an unprecedented opportunity to enhance Pohang's global competitiveness, we will mobilize all means and methods to make an all-out effort to attract Tesla."
To attract the 'Tesla Gigafactory 2nd Plant,' a hot topic among local governments nationwide, Pohang City is emphasizing differentiated strengths such as stable supply of core parts and securing large-scale sites based on top-level infrastructure in fields such as steel, batteries, ports, and R&D. The city has submitted a letter of intent to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and expects to select the final candidate site to be delivered to Tesla within the year.
