"Train Interior Bent with Loud Noise... Unable to Breathe Due to Smoke"
[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] Two subway trains collided in the capital of Mexico, resulting in casualties.
On the 7th (local time), major foreign media including AP reported that such an accident occurred in a subway station tunnel in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. According to authorities, at 9:16 a.m. that day, a collision between trains occurred in the tunnel between stations on Line 3 of the subway, resulting in the death of one woman. Currently, 57 injuries have been confirmed.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident. Line 3 is a route that connects Mexico City from north to south. A passenger on the accident train said, "There was a loud noise, the inside of the train bent, and passengers screamed and cried," adding, "The train lost power, and there was so much smoke that it was suffocating and impossible to breathe."
With a population of 20 million, Mexico City’s subway is a major transportation means used by 4.6 million people daily on average. Opened in 1969, it currently operates 12 lines with 195 stations. However, issues such as poor construction, inadequate maintenance, and lack of supervision have been consistently pointed out. In May 2021, an elevated railway collapsed, killing 26 people and injuring about 100 others.
