7% Discount for Early Payment of Car Tax (Annual Prepayment)

Gwangjin-gu Offers 7% Discount on Annual Prepayment of Vehicle Tax from the 16th to the 31st

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) will operate the 2023 vehicle tax prepayment (annual payment) period from the 16th to the 31st of this month.

If you prepay the vehicle tax, which is regularly paid in June and December, all at once in January, you can receive a 7% discount on the tax amount corresponding to the period from February to December.

Prepayment (annual payment) can also be applied for in March, June, and September, but the 7% discount applies only to the remaining period until the end of the year, so applying and paying in January offers the greatest discount benefit.

You can apply and pay through the Seoul Metropolitan Government local tax payment system or by calling or visiting the Vehicle Tax Team in the Taxation Division 2 at Gwangjin-gu Office.

Those who prepaid (annual payment) in 2022 will receive a payment notice around mid-January and do not need to apply separately. However, if the vehicle has changed, reapplication is required.

Payment can be made through various methods including ▲bank counters, CD/ATM machines ▲credit card payment ▲Seoul ETAX system ▲Seoul STAX app ▲taxpayer account transfer via a dedicated account.

If the vehicle is transferred or deregistered after prepayment (annual payment), the difference can be refunded.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “Paying vehicle tax in January provides the greatest discount benefits,” and added, “We hope to actively promote the prepayment (annual payment) system so that more residents can benefit.”

Jongno-gu Offers 7% Discount on Lump-Sum Vehicle Tax Payment from the 16th to 31st

Jongno-gu (District Mayor Jeong Moon-heon) is implementing the ‘Vehicle Tax Annual Prepayment System’ that offers a 7% discount on the annual vehicle tax if paid in a lump sum from the 16th to the 31st of this month for registered vehicles in 2023.

The vehicle tax annual prepayment system can be applied for four times a year (January, March, June, September), and this month offers up to a 7% deduction on the annual tax amount paid.

Those who prepaid vehicle tax last year will receive the 2023 annual vehicle tax notice in January with the discounted amount without any separate procedures.

Vehicle owners wishing to prepay for the first time can apply by January 31 through the Seoul Internet Tax Payment System (ETAX) and pay via account transfer or credit card. They can also visit or call the Taxation Division 2 at the district office to apply.

Even if the vehicle is transferred or scrapped after prepayment, the tax amount corresponding to the period after the transfer or scrapping date can be fully refunded, and no additional vehicle tax will be charged if the address changes after prepayment.

Meanwhile, Jongno-gu has set up a ‘Comprehensive Tax’ section on the district office website that provides detailed information on local tax types and penalty taxes imposed for late filing or payment.

It also provides guidance on the ‘Local Tax Relief System’ to protect taxpayers’ interests and rights by offering remedies for residents who have suffered from illegal or unfair dispositions or have not received necessary dispositions.

In addition, the district offers local tax refund application services via phone, mail, fax, as well as text messages and KakaoTalk, enhancing taxpayer convenience. Anyone can easily apply for local tax refunds 24/7 by adding the district as a KakaoTalk friend and can also express their intention to donate the refund amount.

District Mayor Jeong Moon-heon stated, “We hope residents pay their taxes on time and enjoy the benefits,” and added, “We will explore various ways to maximize taxpayer convenience, such as the KakaoTalk local tax refund service, and continue to provide proactive tax administration for residents.”
