[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City Nam-gu and Buk-gu Public Health Centers are operating smoking cessation clinics year-round, providing counseling and pharmacotherapy to smokers who resolve to quit smoking in the new year, aiming to increase the smoking cessation rate and reduce the smoking rate in the region.

As smoking cessation contributes to the improvement of lung and heart functions, alleviating and aiding recovery from COVID-19 symptoms, the need for it is growing. At the Nam-gu and Buk-gu Public Health Centers' smoking cessation clinics, experts provide counseling and various smoking cessation support services to help citizens break free from the highly addictive habit of smoking.

The smoking cessation clinics conduct customized tests such as exhaled carbon monoxide measurement, nicotine dependence tests, and urine nicotine tests, along with expert smoking cessation counseling for six months. Nicotine patches, gum, and smoking cessation aids are provided free of charge.

Additionally, various incentives to encourage smoking cessation are offered, including souvenirs for those who succeed in quitting smoking for three and six months.

The smoking cessation clinics operate on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. At the Nam-gu Public Health Center smoking cessation clinic, a night smoking cessation clinic is held every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for citizens who find it difficult to visit during working hours.

Furthermore, for those who wish to quit smoking but find it difficult to visit the clinics due to work or other reasons, a ‘mobile smoking cessation clinic’ visits workplaces and institutions. Through phone reservations and QR code easy registration services, smoking cessation counselors provide telephone counseling and smoking cessation services, striving to foster a culture of smoking cessation.

A Pohang City official stated, “Deciding and acting to quit smoking is not easy, but it is essential for the health of individuals and the community. We hope many citizens will succeed in quitting smoking this new year through the public health center smoking cessation clinics.”
