The former site of Andong Station in downtown Andong is being transformed into a cultural tourism town through extensive development.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] Andong City is undertaking a large-scale development of the old Andong Station site, covering over 180,000㎡, into a cultural tourism town after relocating Andong Station to Songhyeon-dong two years ago.
On the 5th, Gyeongbuk Andong City announced, “Since downtown Andong has been divided north-south causing great inconvenience to citizens, we have proactively started a project for a connecting road between the north end of Yeonggadaegyo Bridge in downtown Andong and the old Andong Station plaza by initiating a feasibility study for the urban planning facility decision on the connecting road.” The plan is to complete the urban planning facility changes this year and begin construction next year.
Additionally, procedures are underway to create cultural, welfare, and relaxation spaces with Andong’s unique characteristics on the old Andong Station site.
Along with the development of the old Andong Station site, utilization projects are also being promoted for the 35.1 km of abandoned railway land. Regional development projects include the creation of Neulsolgil Trail in Okya-dong, Andong City, a themed street connecting the old Andong Station, Imcheonggak, and Wolyeonggyo Bridge, the landmarking of Seongnak Railway Bridge, and the creation of the Light Tunnel in Waryong Tunnel. Plans are also being devised for utilization methods tailored to each section’s characteristics, such as marathon courses and trekking courses.
Furthermore, storytelling will be infused into six small stations to create spaces that citizens can always use and enjoy.
Andong City stated, “Through the utilization of the old Andong Station site, we will actively strive for balanced regional development, economic revitalization, and strengthening Andong’s competitiveness,” and added, “We ask for the active interest and participation of civil society for the successful regeneration of the original downtown area.”
