[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 5th that it will conduct a focused inspection on false and exaggerated advertisements of gift products online ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
The inspection targets include foods related to immunity, joint health, menopausal health, and hair, functional cosmetics such as whitening and wrinkle improvement, personal medical devices for muscle pain relief, and oral hygiene toothpaste.
The main inspection items are ▲ advertisements that confuse general foods as health functional foods ▲ advertisements that mislead general cosmetics as functional cosmetics ▲ false and exaggerated advertisements of medical devices ▲ advertisements that cause general products to be mistaken for medical devices.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety will promptly request the Korea Communications Standards Commission and others to block detected sites, and will take administrative actions against intentional and habitual violators.
Additionally, the Ministry introduced points to keep in mind for wise product purchases. Health functional foods can only be advertised for their recognized functions and should be remembered as different from medicines for disease prevention or treatment.
Cosmetics that are advertised as medicines for disease prevention or treatment should not be purchased, and medical devices should be checked whether they are approved, certified, or reported products. Products that advertise unapproved effects or cause general products to be mistaken for medical devices should not be purchased or used.
