This project, commissioned by the Korea Rail Network Authority, is the first section of the southern extension of the Shinbundang Line connecting Gwanggyo Jungang Station and Suwon Homaesil District. It involves constructing approximately 4 km of double-track railway and one underground integrated station. Once this section opens, travel time from Homaesil District to Gangnam is expected to be significantly reduced.
The total contract amount is 427 billion KRW. HJ Heavy Industries will serve as the lead contractor of the consortium with a 45% stake. The detailed design will be carried out this year, with groundbreaking scheduled for next year. The construction period is 60 months.
The authority conducted the bidding under a turnkey method, combining design and construction. HJ Heavy Industries received balanced scores across all design fields and was particularly praised for its design of the railway alignment and for enhancing resident mobility and accessibility. It is reported that the decision was influenced by their creative ideas optimizing the route alignment, improving operational efficiency by reducing travel time, and proposing solutions to anticipated complaints.
HJ Heavy Industries has extensive construction experience in railway and subway projects. It has participated in projects including the Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway, Wonju~Gangneung, Seongnam~Yeoju, and Ulsan~Pohang lines. Currently, it is working on the second phase of the Janghang Line upgrade, Chuncheon~Sokcho, Samsung~Dongtan, and the Seoul Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX) Line A. The company ranked 3rd in public construction contract amounts in 2020 and 5th in 2021 within the industry.
An HJ Heavy Industries official stated, "Although the construction industry is generally facing difficulties, our company plans to actively pursue the construction market, including public projects, based on our numerous construction achievements and differentiated technological capabilities."
