[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] On the first working day of the new year, January 2, KT CEO Koo Hyun-mo defined the network outage as a 'disaster' and emphasized 'safety and stability,' while KT internet service experienced abnormalities in the Busan and Gyeongnam regions.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT, from around 2:30 PM for about 20 minutes, internet service abnormalities occurred in Gyeongnam areas including Gimhae, Ulsan, Busan, and Changwon, causing inconvenience to users.
On online communities and social media such as Twitter, posts appeared stating "KT wired internet experienced an outage," reporting difficulties with in-store payments and other services.
A Ministry of Science and ICT official said, "We have requested KT to report detailed information," adding, "We are currently waiting for the report."
A KT official stated, "We have not yet received any special report regarding the outage," and "We are currently assessing the situation."
In his New Year's address that morning, CEO Koo emphasized, "Network outages are regarded not as failures but as disasters," and stressed, "We must raise the service level one step higher in terms of safety and stability."
